Rachel was very excited about her first day of school. She is usually not afraid or very nervous at all... just excited to learn! She really does like to be busy and learn, so a perfect candidate for school. : )
This year she was going to a new school, because of our move, and also taking the bus for the first time. So, a lot of new things, but they didn't seem to phase her at all.
The bus picks her up at the end of our road, so too far for a little first-grader to walk alone. The other kids, Maggie and I walked her down to the corner... it was a beautiful morning! We got there in plenty of time and had fun just hanging out until the bus pulled up. They gave me a time that the bus would be there, which was nice, and it was right on time. She got in and that was it... my first-grader off to school.
Christy sent me a link to a picture that was on The Reporter online. Rachel was blurry, but on the edge of one of the pictures. Was nice to see that she did, in fact, make it to school! Without seeing that I could only assume. Thanks Christy! : )
Then it was time for the bus to drop her off. I had no idea when she'd be dropped off, so Eli and I (Kate was home with Mike) got to the corner by 3:30pm... wanted there to be no chance we'd miss her. It was VERY hot at this time during the day... and no shade (except my shadow for Eli.) We waited and waited and waited... two buses went by with no Rachel. I was getting very nervous by this point. It was just after 4pm. Could she have gotten on the wrong bus, did they forget about her... not a good feeling at all. The second bus that drove by dropped off an older girl, so I assumed it came from the high school. The driver asked me who I was waiting for. After I told her Bus #31 from Lakeshore, she said that she did see that bus shortly before and assured me it should be on it's way. I felt a little better, but wasn't going to feel good until I saw Rachel.
Finally, Rachel was dropped off at almost 4:15pm. The first words out of her mouth were, "That was a long ride!" And, second words, "I'm hungry!" But, she did say it was fun and she had a great day at school... great to hear! She made a comment that the bus driver asked her her name and where she lived, which thankfully Rachel knew... didn't think to quiz her for possible questions. Rachel said the driver asked that because Rachel was new to the route she didn't have her info... yikes. Maybe Rachel misunderstood - not sure... I sent Rachel's bus slip along with her today, so hopefully any confusion can be resolved if there's any still there. I also sent a note to her teacher to ask her to please make sure Rachel gets on the right bus after school, which I don't think was the issue at all. I think she was just forgotten about.
Eli: Chegwin (4K) - Sept. 2
Eli has been very excited to go to the school that Rachel went to two years ago and to have her same teachers. He also has a good friend in his class, which he's excited about. With Eli the excitement that he shows for so long can quickly vanish when the moment comes to do something. He also had many new things this year with school... a new school and the bus for the first time. Eli doesn't usually deal as well with change as his sister, especially when he's doing something without his sister. So, I was a little worried that his excitement would change to fear as soon as the bus pulled up.
Well, our little buddy proved that he is independent and can deal well with change on his own. He was so excited for the bus to come and went out there with no problems at all when it pulled up! It was a great feeling! For 4K the bus pulls right into our driveway... how nice is that! His good friend was also already on the bus. It was a great experience for him... and me. I have no concerns about him on that bus... the driver was very nice and introduced herself to me when I took Eli out... very nice. He got in and that was it... my 4K-er off to school.
Next...
So, now the kids are both in school... and Kate is napping (wait, I think she just woke up). Was nice and quiet for just long enough to let me get this done. Much nicer to do this before 10pm! A few more updates to do though when time permits... we've been having lots of fun lately and the kids are learning new things. Watch for my next post(s). ; )
