bitter sweet mile stone for Kate

I am just realizing that I think Kate is done sucking her thumb.  I'm both happy and sad at the same time.  She always looked so cute sucking her thumb, but her teeth were starting to suffer from her soothing habit. ;)

So, how did I get her to stop?  Well, it was pretty much an accident… and one that still gives me the heebie geebies.  No idea how to spell that!

When we were at the Appleton mall a couple weekends ago, I was waiting by the lockers with Kate near the restrooms.  She was playing with the lockers and I guess I bumped a locker when her thumb was in it.  She tried pulling it out while I was still leaning on it and got a pretty good scrape on her thumb… yes, the sucking thumb.  I felt so bad!  She cried pretty good and it looked like it hurt so much.  I had a bandaid in the my purse and put it on right away and then tried not to think about it, because I felt so bad.

Little did I know this was going to be the start of getting her to stop sucking her thumb.  We kept a bandaid on her thumb all the time… the scrape was a good one and I really wanted it to be protected and I was noticing that she wasn't really missing being able to suck her thumb.  She did catch herself put her bandaid-ed thumb in her mouth and then would take it out.

She hasn't had a bandaid on now for a couple days and I haven't noticed her sucking her thumb.  She fell asleep on the couch tonight and her thumb wasn't in her mouth.  Yes, it made me sad.  I took her to bed and she usually snuggles in with her blankets and puts her thumb in her mouth… but, not tonight.  I even pulled the blankets back to check for sure and she didn't have it in her mouth.  Again, I was happy, but also sad.  She's getting too big…

Enjoy the little things, even those bad habits… they, too, will be missed.

Keep smiling!
