There have been so many sad stories that I've been hearing recently about kids with illnesses, tragic accidents and natural disasters... I'm always trying to figure out what I can do to help. Everyone always wants to help, but sometimes it's hard to determine how to help or what help is needed. When I saw that there was an organization that helped put smiles on children in the hospital I knew immediately it was something I wanted to do.

Quick background: The organization was started just over two years ago by a girl who recently graduated from high school. When she was 11 she began suffering from a chronic illness that forced her to undergo 23 surgeries, which meant many hospital stays. She understands how difficult it is to be a child who is hospitalized or seriously ill. Her experiences have taught her that kids who are hospitalized often feel forgotten, sad, lonely and isolated. With the help of many volunteers, the organization has already sent 19,000 cards to kids. Wow!
I was finally watching the OK tornado special by Blake Shelton tonight that I had dvr'd several days ago. It reminded me that there are so many people in this world that could use a reason to smile. And, sometimes a handmade card with a smiley face on it will do just that. I figure it's worth a try, right?
